No Pain, No Gain

Weeks mileage, April 20-26

Great week. After last weeks long run I was a little stiff getting back into full stride. I was also experimenting running in some lower profile (minimal) shoes to strengthen the calves and feet, but after a few days I decided to leave the racing flats for the races and stick to a light weight trainer for cushy easy days and long runs. My stabilizer muscles were just too sore, maybe a slower adaption process is necessary.

Starting the Stack

Weeks mileage, April13-19

Mon: 6m tempo
Tues: 4m easy
Wed: 9.15m tempo - LakeWood trail. I almost got nailed in the face by a ricocheted golf ball shanked off course, glad I wasn't 2 seconds faster, as it skimmed my head
Thurs: REST
Fri: 4m hard effort 6:49/pace
Sat: 16.1m long (2:03) - From the doorstep, West Plaza loop. It poured rain for the entire first 10 miles. The trolley trail was full of puddles, which forced me to run in the grass and jump water holes constantly. I made quite a scene at a Gas Station when I stopped for a Gatorade and stood at the counter sopping wet. The rain finally cleared down Pennsylvania Ave. I had to take my shirt off and wring it out, I really wish I had worn a singlet. My wingwam socks failed me and slipped down passed the back of my heels which caused some small blisters. Although windy and wet, I'm really satisfied with the run. I had no idea I was keeping sub8 pace the whole way....whooohoo!! Super cold ice bath felt great
Sun: REST

Total: 39.3miles, 4:54hrs

Boston marathon is tomorrow, can't wait to watch.

First Post

Welcome to my first blog. My intention here is to keep friends and family up to date as I train and attempt to qualify for the 2010 Boston Marathon while also sharing pics, adventures and who knows what else. My focus this summer is to stay healthy, injury free and build a high mileage foundation going into Fall training. My objective is to break 3:10 at the Dallas White Rock Marathon, Dec 13th

Tuesday AM-
After a hard effort 10k and strength exercises on Monday, I opted for an easy 4miler around the neighborhood this morning. Mid April and I could still see my breath at 34degrees. The wind was calm and Spring is definitely ready to pop. Today I started to plot my summer mileage plan with hopes of building up to 50-60mpw over the course of the next few weeks. It's getting hard not to 'up' mileage too quickly, but I don't want to risk injury. As the weather improves, the long runs have become addicting and I have many trails ready to explore.

Angie and I have plans with some friends for Taco Tuesday tonight, so I'm looking forward to gorging myself before a hard interval circuit tomorrow : )

Here's a little something to keep your foot tapping. I found myself in 'splendid isolation' on a long 15miler this past weekend and this song stuck with me. I think I will also include new songs on this evolving blog that are getting lots of play on my ipod. Stay tuned...
